PEFC

Its acronym in English translates as the Program for the Recognition of Forest Certification. It is a leading global alliance of national forest certification systems. As an international non-governmental and non-profit organization, it is dedicated to promoting sustainable forest management through independent third-party certification.

What do we do and why?

As a non-profit organization, PEFC International supports national forest certification systems developed through multi-stakeholder processes and tailored to local priorities and conditions. We believe that forest certification must be local; That’s why we choose to work with national organizations to advance responsible forestry. Forest certification is our core. We provide forest owners, from the largest to the smallest, with a tool to demonstrate their responsible practices, while enabling consumers and businesses to shop sustainably.

A global alliance

We have more than 53 national members which are independent national organizations that develop and implement the PEFC system within their country and promote certification standards. We also have the participation through membership of 30 international stakeholders, including companies, organizations and associations whose principles and objectives support ours.

Our history
In 1999, small and family forest owners in Europe came together to create a forest certification system that would allow them to demonstrate their excellence in sustainable forest management. 20 years later, PEFC is the largest forest certification system in the world!
